Fatal Construction Accidents on the Rise in NY
So far, the year 2015 has been an unusually dangerous time in the construction industry in New York City. Eight people have been killed in construction accidents so far this year—as many as in all of 2014. Not since 2008 have there been so many construction-related accidents in the city.
Why? The answer could be a simple one: Not since 2008 has there been so much construction going on in NYC. When more work is being done, there are more chances for accidents to happen.
During a rise in the number of construction projects, some workers may be putting in longer hours. Tired workers are more likely to make minor errors that can compromise safety. Additionally, there are often a number of newer, inexperienced laborers at many job sites during a construction boon.
This rise in accidents—and deaths—is worrisome, since Mayor Bill de Blasio is calling for more construction in order to achieve certain development goals for the city.
