Boat-Bicycle Accident on Staten Island

If you live in the New York area, you probably see boats and bicycles nearly every day. What you probably don’t see every day is a boat slamming into a pair of bicyclists. Yet on an unseasonably warm Monday, the day before the winter solstice, that very thing happened on Staten Island.

A boat trailer somehow came loose from the pickup truck that was hauling it, causing the boat to crash into two women who were riding their bicycles. Emergency responders rushed both cyclists to nearby Staten Island University Hospital, where one of them later died.

Police are examining the pickup’s trailer hitch to determine if a modification or incorrect installation may have caused the accident. The driver of the pickup truck is cooperating with the investigation. For further details, read here.
